What are the Upcoming Wisconsin Building Code Changes?

Industry News

There has been a lot of buzz about the upcoming changes to the Wisconsin building codes (IRC and IECC 2024). While these pending changes have some builders concerned, we have good news: If you’re the kind of quality builder we know you are, you’re already ahead of the curve.

Let’s cut through the noise and talk about what really matters in building science and why your commitment to quality construction already puts you in a great position.

Wisconsin Building Codes: Where Builders Stand

Here in Wisconsin, we work under the UDC (Uniform Dwelling Code). We’ve seen our share of code updates since 2009, but one thing hasn’t changed: Our building partners know what they’re doing! Many of you have made proper air sealing and insulation non-negotiable parts of your builds for years. That’s not because a code told you to; it’s because you know it’s the right way to build.

Unlike other states that had to adopt outside standards, Wisconsin’s unique position (we have our own state-wide building code) has allowed us to maintain standards that make sense for our climate and construction methods.

The Wisconsin Builders Association is a wonderful organization that represents all builders and subcontractors in the state, encouraging us to be involved with our lawmakers as they guide state code changes. In fact, Ashly Hartman of RVI and Ashley Favorite of Lakefront Building & Design recently traveled to Madison to meet with our representatives, ensuring they understand how changes in the code affect us on the ground.

What Really Matters for Wisconsin Building Code Changes

The best way to know that your builds are solid? It’s not about meeting some arbitrary standard. It’s about real, measurable results. For example, blower door testing and thermal imaging scans prove what matters:

  • Superior indoor air quality
  • Better structural integrity
  • Protection from pests
  • Healthier living spaces

This matters whether you’re building primary living homes or secondary vacation homes in our beautiful Northwoods. While some of your clients might not focus on energy bills, all of them care about keeping critters out and protecting their investment.

And let’s face it… when a homeowner calls about raccoons in their attic or ice dams on their roof, that’s not just an inconvenience! It’s a sign that something in the building envelope is not working as it should. As a builder, you don’t want problems like that to ever arise.

Moving Forward to Exceed Wisconsin Building Code Standards

RVI is here as your resource, not your rulebook. The builders who work with us have already set themselves apart, because they know that quality insulation and air sealing are selling points that make their home builds better than the rest.

When your clients ask about home performance or long-term durability, you can point to specific features, standards, and test results. This is the kind of confidence that comes from doing things right!

Building quality homes means exceeding codes; not just meeting them. Your commitment to constructing houses in Wisconsin means you’re already prepared for whatever changes might come with the code updates.
